Atomic Backland 86 SL Skis
Description
The Atomic Backland SL 86 is a touring ski that actually skis. At just over a kilo per ski in a 172, it’s built around a karuba-poplar wood core with a Carbon Backbone and fiberglass to keep things snappy without getting twitchy. A Dura Cap Sidewall locks in edge hold, while the new HRZN 3D tip adds surface area up front for easier trail-breaking and smoother turn entry. Tip and tail notches speed up transitions, and the moderate sidecut keeps things nimble without feeling nervous.
This ski isn’t about charging; it’s about precision, control, and efficiency when the snow gets mixed. Think long days, technical terrain, firm conditions, or spring linkups where stability and predictability matter more than brute-force power.
Character
Light, quick, and confident on hard snow. Forgiving in chop, easy to steer in tight spots, and more stable than most skis in its weight class. The flex is supportive without being harsh—making it versatile for everything from daily missions in a continental snowpack to steep spring objectives.
What’s new
Compared to the previous generation, the SL 86 trims weight across sizes (around 50–100 g lighter per ski), adds the redesigned HRZN 3D tip for lower swing weight and smoother initiation, and uses a lower-impact construction that cuts production CO₂ by about 30%.
Who it’s for
Tourers who value efficiency but don’t want to sacrifice edge hold and reliability. Perfect for big vertical days, spring missions, and technical terrain. If you want a damp, high-speed charger, look elsewhere. If you want a dependable, precise, and light touring ski that won’t punish you when conditions turn weird, this one’s for you.
