Queen and King of the Hill - Week #4 - Third Peak

June 7th to June 15th 2025

Siy̓ám̓ Smánit. Stawamus Chief. Sacred, iconic, and relentless.

For the final round, we’re skipping the crowds and heading straight into the heart of the Chief’s lesser-known side. The backdoor route to Third Peak is a raw line—part roots, part slab, part hands-on scramble. It’s quieter here, steeper too, and rough around the edges in all the right ways.

Third Peak doesn’t need a podium to feel like a prize. With big-sky views and granite underfoot, it’s a reminder of just how wild and unreal this corridor is. Whether you’re chasing the crown or just grinding it out to the end, this trail delivers the kind of payoff that sticks with you. Sea-to-Sky at its finest.

Getting There

Park at the Apron lot. From the entrance of the Apron lot, run along the Mamquam FSR for 1.4 km. You will then reach the start of the "normal" Slhanay trail.

The Route

There upper section of the Third Peak ascent features a "climbers" shortcut with two steep chimneys. For the safety of others (rockfall hazard, fall hazard, etc) and to ensure a fair challenge for all, you are required to stick to the easier established trail. NOT SHORTCUT ALLOWED.

Start your watch as soon as you leave the Mamquam FSR and enter the Slhanay trail.

After a few hundred meters, you will hit the junction between the Slhanay trail and the Disaster Response route. Turn right onto the Disaster Response Route.

Follow this trail until it flattens at the saddle between the Third Peak and Slhanay. At this point you will hit another junction where you will also head right onto the Third Peak trail.

The trail then becomes more flowy and takes you towards the Chief. There is one more junction a little further where you will want to head right. The correct trail is indicated by a "Chief" wood sign.

Keep following the Third Peak trail past a few scrambling steps until you reach the upper section of Third Peak. The trail will then take you left along the base of some cliffs. Follow the trail until it starts going up a steep dirt slope to a rope swing. Turn right and pass a few short sections of Via Ferrata until you reach the plateau atop Third Peak.

The finish line is located at the small pond on the summit of the Third Peak. Stop your watch when you reach the pond.
