The Purcells is a thoroughly updated and re-vised, essential guide to peaks (except The Bugaboos) in the Columbia Mountains, last published in 1977. This guidebook is an invitation to the scrambler and climber to explore the spectacular scenery and excellent rock on over 1000 routes, documented with more than 400 colour photographs on 600 peaks. Over 400 of these routes might be considered scrambles.

Tbe Recle Selkik are an iterior nest nain takey Bitin in mie

east. They are located in the southeastern part of the province, between the Rocky Mountain Trench to the east, Kootenay Lake and the Purcell (Beaver-Duncan) Trench to the west and the Trans-Canada Highway to the north. These mountains extend beyond the Canada-U.S. border to the south.

This region is the traditional territories of the Ktunaxa (Pamak?is) and Shuswap (Sewépem) Nations. On the map of his (1857-60) expedition, Captain Palliser called the mountains between Findlay Creek and the St. Mary River the Purcell Range. George M. Dawson, director of the Geological Survey of Canada, subsequently expanded the name to include all the territory between the Rocky Mountain Trench and Kootenay Lake. The range most likely takes its name from Dr. Edward Purcell, LL.D., a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in London, who recommended John William Sullivan to Captain John Palliser to undertake officially the expedition's astronomical observations and secretarial work.
