Patagonia R1® TechFace Jacket (Men's)
The TechFace sits in a useful window that most layering systems don't cover well: warm enough for cold aerobic output, wind-resistant enough to wear as an outer layer in moving mountain air, and abrasion-resistant enough to not care about rock contact or pack straps. One jacket, a lot of scenarios.
The fabric is a 90% recycled polyester / 10% spandex double weave with a smooth outer face. Inside it feels like a fleece, soft and warm against the skin. Outside, the smooth face sheds moisture, resists abrasion, and takes a PFAS-free DWR finish. On a skin track or a moderate climbing approach in variable weather, reviewers consistently find it covers both the windbreaker and the fleece role without needing to carry both. One long-term user described it as an essential piece across biking, hiking, climbing, and skiing across multiple seasons, which is about as versatile a track record as a mid-layer gets.
Two high handwarmer pockets with mesh backers sit harness and pack-compatible. Low-bulk cuffs stay clear of handholds. Adjustable hem via a cord in the handwarmer pocket. Articulated patterning handles overhead reaches without pulling.
