Pa'lante Joey Backpack
The Joey is Pa'lante's dedicated fastpack. Where the V2 w/ Joey Straps is a thru-hiking pack that borrows the vest harness, the Joey was designed from the start around moving fast with a multi-day kit. The volume is intentionally constrained: 24L is enough for a full three-season overnight setup with up to four days of food, but not much more. That ceiling is a feature, not a flaw. It forces a realistic look at what you're actually carrying and keeps the load in a range where running is still comfortable.
The vest harness is two layers of 3D mesh that wraps and molds to the upper torso rather than sitting on traditional shoulder points. There's no hip belt and no frame. The pack relies on its geometry and a close body fit to stay in place. In extended field testing across multiple overnighters and longer fastpacking trips, reviewers consistently found minimal bounce even at capacity, which is the single thing that separates a usable fastpack from one that just looks the part. Available in 210D UHMWPE Gridstop or Ultraweave 200X, both reinforced with Dyneema fibers throughout.
Pocket layout follows the same Pa'lante logic as the rest of the lineup. The bottom stash pocket (trash portal on the opposite side) is accessible while moving. Side pockets fit one 1L bottle each and work with shock cord tensioners to secure trekking poles or taller gear. Shoulder strap pockets handle 500ml soft flasks on the upper section and snacks or a phone below. One size at 18" torso. No hip belt.
A few things worth knowing going in: the shoulder strap flask pockets are sized for shorter, wider 500ml flasks. Taller, narrower bottles will poke out until you've drunk some water down. The pack is weather resistant but not waterproof, particularly if the main compartment is packed out fully and can't roll shut all the way. A pack liner is a reliable fix. The lack of a waistbelt is fine up to about 15lbs; beyond that, longer carries start to feel it.
iRunFar named it the best overall fastpack in their roundup, a designation it has held across multiple annual updates.
