Atomic Backland Pro Ski Boots (Men's)

The Backland Pro sits in the middle of Atomic's touring boot lineup: lighter and more uphill-focused than the XTD Carbon, heavier and more downhill-capable than the Backland UL. At 1,170g per boot and a 100 flex, it's built for skiers who spend meaningful time on the skin track and still want to ski consequential terrain on the way down.

The walk mechanism is the Backland's defining characteristic across the entire line. The Frictionless Pivot and Free/Lock 4.0 system gives 74 degrees of cuff rotation, which is among the best in the category and what separates the Backland line from touring boots that technically have a walk mode but don't actually walk well. At 74 degrees, stride is natural and unimpeded across steep skin tracks, bootpacks, and approach terrain. Transition is a single lever, and the mechanism stays reliable in cold and icy conditions.

Closure is via Cross Lace 2.0: a cable integrated into the lower buckle that wraps the foot and ankle more evenly than a standard buckle alone, improving power transfer on the descent without adding hardware weight. The 3D Gold Tour liner is thermomoldable, breathable, and washable, with Dura Shield TPU reinforcement in high-wear zones. Shell is Prolite construction: a blend of materials weighted toward lower mass without sacrificing the shell stiffness needed for a 100 flex rating. Both shell and liner are heat-moldable for fit customization.

Worth knowing: the Backland Pro is a 100 flex boot, which is appropriate for recreational touring skiers using narrower skis, but will feel soft to aggressive or heavier skiers on bigger skis. Those skiers should look at the XTD Carbon at 120 flex instead. Last is on the medium-narrow side; higher-volume or wide feet benefit from a shell punch or fitting session before committing to a full season.
