The Alpha SV has been Arc'teryx's flagship alpine shell for over two decades. SV stands for Severe. That's the brief.
The shell is 80-denier Gore-Tex Pro. The extra weight buys you a jacket that guides drag through rock chimneys and ice couloirs for seven consecutive seasons without it showing. You feel that weight at 595g, and that's the trade the Alpha SV asks you to make.
The StormHood earns every word written about it. Helmet-compatible, single-pull glove-friendly adjustment, and it actually moves with your head rather than staying fixed while you turn. Even in sustained 50km/h winds with gusts to 40mph, it holds position across hours without touching it.
The feature set is deliberately minimal: two chest pockets, a security pocket inside, pit zips, adjustable hem. There are no hand warmer pockets; weight goes where it's needed in alpine terrain, not where it's comfortable. Everything is WaterTight zipped and fully seam-taped.
This is not a high-output shell. 80-denier Gore-Tex Pro doesn't breathe like a lightweight membrane. Wear it on the belay, in the storm, on the descent.
