Here's a couple tidbits about Haley.

How did you get into mountain sports?

I grew up hiking and rock climbing, so I have always loved being in the mountains! However I retired from basketball after my first year of university, when I discovered trail running through my older brother.

What is your favourite race (running or skiing)

I have no particular favourite - but any race that involves exploring a new zone while being competitive. I loved the Elphinstone ascent last year (great local VK!), and the Youth Skyrunning World Champs is an incredible race.

What does a typical week of training look like for you?

A typical week is usually running and biking my local trails. I like creative routes/linkups, and packing in lots of vert! Also, the occasional sufferfest.

What’s your favourite trail?

Halvor Lunden Trail

What’s your favourite trail running shoe? What’s your favourite road running shoe?

Favourite trail shoe is the Norda 001, or Salmon Pulsar SLAB 3. Road is the HOKA Rocket.

What’s your favourite piece of kit?

Can never go wrong with a good sock choice. Compressport Pro Racing Socks for the win.

Favourite recovery snack?

Anything bread / pastry related. My mom makes a wicked sourdough. Even plain baguette hits post run.

What was your biggest goof?

At the top of a world's VK someone suggested taking the ‘back route’ down instead of walking down the racecourse (like everyone else), as it was quicker. A few other countries agreed they would take this back route - and it would lead to a road where they had organized buses to pick us up (with additional room that would drive us back to town). What a win!

Long story short we took this back route. There were no buses, no road, and barely a trail. We were lost for hours post race in the Montenegro wilderness and believe we might’ve illegally crossed into Albania. Finally we found our way back to the top of the VK - accepting defeat and descending it after hours of slogging. Despite some gnar cases of heatstroke, that was team bonding 101.

What do you do when you’re not running/skiing?

I'll usually be hanging out with my dog, making or drinking a coffee, or will be at work.

What’s something you wish more people knew about you?

I enjoy little busy-work projects like drawing and building things! I’m currently restoring an old canoe I found.

Nothing in the fridge, nothing in the pantry. Where are we headed?

Chada Thai, Hanayuki Sushi, or anything Greek.

What truly underrated piece of kit do you think more people should carry?

A pair of signature sunglasses is crucial to the kit and everyone should have a pair!

What’s your most unhinged piece of trail running advice?

Trail running can be an eating competition. Bulletproof your gut.

Thanks for the time Haley!
