Here's a couple tidbits about Brendan.
How did you get into mountain sports?
I grew up skiing, mountain biking and hiking. I retired from soccer sometime during high school and somehow discovered the strange sport of trail running.
What is your favourite race (running or skiing)
Whatever race is next on the calendar. Some historical favourites are the Youth Skyrunning World Championships in Gran Sasso, Italia and the Squamish V.K. “Trail Series”.
What does a typical week of training look like for you?
Spring through Fall typically looks like 13-15 hours of training between running and cycling. Lots of vert!
What’s your favourite trail?
La Jonction
What’s your favourite trail running shoe? What’s your favourite road running shoe?
La Sportiva Prodigio Pro and Nnormal Kjerag. I’ve been enjoying the Adidas Boston’s as a “Super Trainer” these days.
What’s your favourite piece of kit?
Rabbit Speedsters short
Favourite recovery snack?
Pastry and a macchiato
What was your biggest goof?
Karl and I had a great plan of circumnavigating Nch’Kay’ via skis and bicycle. The route was the Garibaldi Névé from South to North and then ride our gravel bikes back to the trailhead in Squamish. We were in a whiteout all day and then rode the Sea to Sky Highway in a deluge. We figured we would grab a pint of the Hazy and some poutine before climbing Garibaldi Park Road. We got a mild case of hypothermia and ended up needing to bail before the 1000m climb. Great memories...
What do you do when you’re not running/skiing?
Chilling, probably in a cafe.
What’s something you wish more people knew about you?
I operate snowcats.
Nothing in the fridge, nothing in the pantry. Where are we headed?
Taka Ramen + Sushi
What truly underrated piece of kit do you think more people should carry?
Headband, thin and packable. A convenient accompaniment to keep warm when you get to the ridge top and it’s blowing!
What’s your most unhinged piece of trail running advice?
Downhill running is just controlled falling, don’t overthink it.
Thanks for the time Brendan!
