Tecnica Zero G Decoy Pro GW Ski Boots (Unisex)
Description
Most hybrid touring boots start as alpine boots with a walk mode bolted on. The Decoy Pro went the other direction: Tecnica took the Zero G Tour Pro, a legitimate touring boot, and built it up with a PU shell, a beefier alpine-style liner, GripWalk soles, and stronger buckles. The result is a boot that sits genuinely in the middle of the touring/alpine spectrum rather than just leaning that direction on paper.
That approach shows up most clearly in the walk mode. At 65 degrees of cuff rotation, the Decoy Pro gives you significantly more freedom than most hybrid competitors, including the Atomic Hawx Ultra XTD (54°) and the Salomon Shift Alpha (55°), both of which are closer to the Cochise's 55° than to what the Decoy Pro offers. For skiers who tour regularly and know how much those extra degrees matter on a steep skin track, that number carries real weight. Once locked for the descent, the 130 flex and GripWalk sole handle hard skiing without drama, though this is not a boot that's going to out-ski a Cochise on the way down, and it doesn't try to.
The liner is heat-moldable via Tecnica's C.A.S. technology, and it's worth taking the time to do it properly. Out of the box the fit is good at 99mm last, but the liner benefits from molding, particularly in the forefoot. Some skiers will find the ankle and instep slightly roomy until dialled in. A session with a boot fitter is a solid investment here.
Best understood as a 50/50 boot in the truest sense: built for skiers who genuinely split their time between the skin track and the descent, not as a resort boot with occasional backcountry aspirations.
