On the map of his (1857-60) expedition, Captain Palliser called the mountains between Findlay Creek and the St. Mary River the Purcell Range. George M. Dawson, director of the Geological Survey of Canada, subsequently expanded the name to include all the territory between the Rocky Mountain Trench and Kootenay Lake. The range most likely takes its name from Dr. Edward Purcell, LL.D., a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in London, who recommended John William Sullivan to Captain John Palliser to undertake officially the expedition's astronomical observations and secretarial work.

Published by Thin Gruel Press

ISBN 978-1-7753241-3-3

David P.
