Week #3 -The Must-Do

Climb: New Yamnuska Ascent

Length: approximately 5 km
Elevation Gain: around 800 m
Please time your effort manually. DO NOT rely exclusively on Strava to time yourself.

Getting to the start: Park at the the Yamnuska Day Use Area.

The Challenge

The challenge starts right at the trailhead in front of the big trail sign.

Yamnuska is one of those must-do hikes in the Rockies. Over 5 km, it will take you from nicely groomed double-tracks to hands-on scrambling sections on the backside of the peak. Since Alberta Parks re-routed the trail last Summer, the old Strava segment held by Joren Titus in 33:39 isn't available anymore. The field is wide open, Game On! 

Follow the well-marked Hiking Trail on the frontside. From the saddle on the East side of Yamnuska, you'll hit a first short rock step that marks the start of the difficult section. From there, you'll want to follow the blue square trail markers until you hit the summit. If you haven't done Yamnuska before, there is a chain section that features some exposure. Using the chains and taking your time will get you across safely.

Start your watch in front of the trail sign at the trailhead, and stop your watch at the summit cairn.

Getting back down: Complete the Yamnuska Loop. An easier trail has been added on the descent for those who want to avoid the scree :)
